Jedi

The Jedi were almost a religious organization that had spread across the entire galaxy. Their order was charged with keeping justice and peace in the galaxy and many of them almost lived monastic lives. They were practitioners of the Force and were fundamentally opposed to the Sith.
The Jedi Order was composed of a Council made up of several Jedi Masters who commanded and directed other Masters, Knights, and padawan apprentices.

History

Jedi first began to appear in the galaxy at around 45,000 B. C., at a time when the galaxy was in turmoil. Their opposite number, the Sith, began to rise at that time as well and conflict quickly sprang up. Some of the early wars between the Jedi and Sith spread across the entire galaxy and did tremendous damage before coming to a head. The worst of those wars was lead by Darth Creepius in his attempt at galactic domination.

Training

Padawan
All Jedi began their training as an apprenticeship to a more experienced Master or Knight. In this apprenticeship they learned the valuable skills they would need to survive in the world of the Jedi, they were given time to practice techniques and they were taught how to use a lightsaber.
Knight
Once a padawan attained the rank of Jedi Knight they were more on their own, they were encouraged to travel the galaxy and help those in need, gaining further experience from the living force and life itself. It was at this stage that many fell to the dark side.
Master
If they lived and persisedt long enough a Jedi became a Master, along with the title they gained a responsibility to teach other Jedi and to help those that they could. Many served on the Jedi Council.

Midichlorians

Much of the power of the Jedi was associated with the midichlorians, microscopic organisms that existed in every living being. A correlation had been shown between the power an individual had over the Force and the concentration of midichlorians in their bloodstream. What role these organisms played is heavily debated.
