The Jedi Council
The Jedi Council was the ruling body of the Jedi Order. It was composed of five Masters who presided over a larger council and dictated Jedi Law. Though the council itself was a larger body the core council governed the dealings of the Jedi. The Core Council or simply Jedi Council consisted of 5 members, one lifetime member, two long-term members and two limited-term members.
History
Born in a time of turmoil when the Jedi were first coming to power and warring with the Sith, the Council was founded at first to direct the war effort and then eventually to maintain structure of training and discipline among those gifted with an sensitivity to the Force.
Over time the Council grew more and more set in its ways until they were too blind to see the threat that the Sith truly posed. During the reign of President Palpatine the entire council was wiped out in one fell swoop when their ship was filled with poisonous snakes and allowed to crash on an unknown world. Though rumors persisted that some council members survived, none ever showed themselves.
An all new council was formed after that point, lead by Master Rhodopsa Zent and taking a more cautious approach to directing the Jedi they did what they could to help those Jedi who remained after Palpatine's purge and Darth Creepius's subsequent mop up.
