Shields
Shields were a generated energy field around starships that kept things out. Low level shields were constantly on to keep out minor particles and debris in space while full Shields contained sufficient power to keep out energy blasts and prevent transport onto or off of ships.

History
Shields were first designed for the practical purpose of keeping space debris and small particles from puncturing starship hulls out. They were further developed into defense technology when other hostile species were encountered.
Construction
Basic shield design varied among different space faring races, however the basic design was a simple manipulation of energy fields to keep matter and energy from damaging starship hulls.
