Probe
Probes were portable sensor arrays that could be sent out to investigate things from a distance and relay information back to the ship.

History
When sensors were not of sufficient strength to gain information needed probes were sent to relay information back. Probes were often expendable once they had sent their information back and thus could be sacrificed in situations studying dangerous things such as black holes.
Construction
Probes were equipped with a wide range of sensor technology and were able to transmit that information back to a stable location.
