History
With limited space on board star ships and the need for recreation that may not be available in deep space, holodecks were designed for crews to feel like they were in outdoor environments. Eventually holonovels were produced that allowed participants to exist within works of fiction, rather than just recreating environments. They also had a tendency to go very wrong and inopportune moments.
Construction
Built on the concept of solid hologram technology and hard light technology, holodecks incorporated these aspects along with conventional tricks like conveyor belts and complex environmental systems to allow the users to feel like they were in a completely different environment.
