Beacon
Beacons were communication technology used to indicate the location of a person or ship, usually in emergencies, when there was a need for some variety of retrieval.
History
Designed for when missions went horribly wrong, beacons of one kind or another were used for centuries starting from something as simple as a flare gun progressing to electronic devices that broadcast over a number of frequencies.
Construction
Beacons varied greatly in their construction but shared the common fact that they could broadcast a particular message over great distances.
