The Unified Galactic Alliance Senate
The Senate of the Unified Galactic Alliance was the ruling body of that organization. It was presided over by the president, however more and more power was given to the President over the years and the Senate were merely an attempt to give the member worlds an illusion of power and influence. In time several senators found ways around their lack of power and built power bases in other ways, subverting the majority of the Alliance and the President.
History
The Senate was founded to give each of the member worlds of the Alliance a voice. Over time that voice became an illusion of a voice and merely a chance to squabble at each other over irrelevant things while shadowy figures played in the background and ran the Alliance. Some of those shadowy figures were senators themselves, others simply pulled the strings of the senators. Over time the power fell into the hands of individual senators much more than it did the senate itself.
