Lieutenant Commander Alice Tolman
"I thought they could use some Prozac."--Alice Tolman on the ship's crew.
Alice Tolman is the Alliance Starship Muffin's counselor, that was deemed necessary given the crew's proclivity for psychosis. She is bubbly and energetic and loves working with people, even if they don't like working with her. She sees neurosis and psychosis in everyone and some inanimate objects and enjoys long discussions about what is inherently wrong with people, which has gotten her into trouble on occasion.
Biography
Early Childhood
Alice Renee Tolman was born on Lunar Colony 231 to Bruce Tolman and Lisa Tolman (neƩ Graves). Both of Alice's parents were trained as psychologists and spent an inordinate amount of time psychoanalyzing everything, including each other and their daughter. They perhaps went a bit overboard with the parenting books and thus Alice's youth was a bit chaotic as many parenting books just don't agree with each other. Other than her overly protective and underly protective (depending on the week) parents Alice's youth was fairly normal. She went to a public grade school, middle school, and high school and enjoyed a moderate popularity as she was a very attractive young woman. As she grew into adulthood she gained an interest in psychology and started considering following in the steps of her parents.
Secondary Education
Alice enrolled in Tranquility College and commuted from home on a daily basis to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. During college she attended a number of parties and met a number of boys who would, in her analysis, lead to many psychological problems in her dealing with the opposite sex. She has not yet figured out why she is attracted to "bad boys" and why she will often pursue men who have no interest in her, however she continues this practice in hopes of being able to analyze exactly why it keeps occurring.
Alice received her doctorate in Psychology at Schlock University in Southern California. Her dissertation, entitled "What the Hell is Wrong With Everyone But Me?" is still displayed in the main building as an example of excellence. During this time her disastrous relationships continued, only to a higher degree. She met and fell in love with a man named Patrick Smythe who had been addicted to painkillers before she'd known him, though even after she learned this she still consented to move in with him, thinking that she could help him through his problems. They were engaged briefly but things finally fell apart. Alice later learned that he was engaged two months after they broke up, and married shortly after. She wishes him well and hopes that he never comes near her again.
Alice's major professor during her Ph.D. studies was a Dr. Samuel Kramer who was secretly performing psychological experiments on seemingly random girls on campus, who he would then brutally kill afterward. He managed to murder seven women and Alice was next on his list when he was caught by the authorities and incarcerated. This accelerated Alice's leaving the University on multiple levels. She sometimes still has nightmares about Dr. Kramer.
After finishing Graduate School Alice joined the ranks of the Alliance Navy and progressed through the ranks serving as Ship's counselor on the Juggernaut, the Ulric and the Lollipop?.
2350 and Beyond
(:thumb Fans./M2-1.jpg width=100 captionfmt="Lt. Commander Alice Tolman." align=right:) Alice joined the crew of the Muffin shortly after Captain Smith took over, making her the only member of the bridge crew not to have served under Captain Rodrigo.
Personality
Alice is outgoing and friendly and seems to like most everyone she meets. She enjoys psychoanalyzing people, much to their dismay but is a generally nice person. She is regarded as a bit dumb but she maintains this is merely an act to put people at ease so that their true selves can be revealed.
Associations
Alice has tried to integrate herself into the Muffin's crew and forge relationships with Shauna and Belinda and to some degree she has succeed. She slept with Johnny Danger under the influence of bad replicator food and has pursued a relationship with two of the ship's resident Space Ninjas, when Jeff rebuffed all of her advances she found that Stan actually had a crush on her and thus shifted her attention to him.
Behind the Scenes
- Alice was created so that the author could poke fun at psychologists
- Amy Adams has portrayed a variety of women in film and t.v. who embody several aspects of Alice's personality, plus Alice is supposed to be very good looking and thus Amy Adams is the perfect choice.
- Alice is also an obvious jab at Deanna Troi of Star Trek the Next Generation in the role of ship's counselor.
- The name Tolman comes from both a reference to Patricia J. Tallman, the actress who portrayed Lyta Alexander in Babylon 5 and the behavioral psychologist Edward C. Tolman.
- As of 4/13/2015 the only member of the main cast who's hypothetical actor has been made into a minifigure.
