This is my explanation and I’m sticking to it.
You know IIRC the wooden stake wasn’t actually to *kill* the vampire: it was to nail it to the bottom of the coffin, preventing it from leaving.
They would also shove bricks in their mouths with violent force.
That … actually kinda makes sense on a lot of levels and helps explain a lot about vampire physiology that seems to be contradictory.
