Self Destruct
The Self Destruct system was a device which induced an overload in the core and forced the ship to destroy itself. It was there in case of an unavoidable ship takeover and was used as a last resort.

History
When it became apparent that certain technologies and information could not be allowed to fall into the hands of any enemy the self destruct mechanism became standard on all Alliance star ships. Though rarely used, the self destruct became a last resort in dire situations.
Construction
Built into the core of the star ship, the self destruct mechanism simply allowed the natural chaotic nature of the engine core to overwhelm itself and not be cooled or regulated by external forces. This produced a quantifiable timeline to an explosive reaction which would envelop the entire ship.
