He’s using his greatest weapon, confusion, by making them take those three seconds to realize that he just meant checkmate. It is that uselessly useful that he did that unlike my lack of reason to write this comment.
When you have a massive super weapon, do you really need a target lock? It seems to me that just firing in their direction will destroy a number of the fighters and maybe even hit the Muffin as well.
Of course if they have a huge recharge time like the Excalibur, they may want to fire only when they are certain of a hit.
Well, unless you a really close to a black hole, the chances of a directed energy beam weapon curving back towards its point of origin is pretty close to zero. But as Mike comments about above, hitting your allies is very much something to be concerned about.
Of course I’m assuming that the “Weapon” is a directed energy weapon. If it is a physical warhead weapon like a torpedo. that is an entirely different matter.
is it wrong that i laughed when i read bob yelling yahtzee?
cause i couldnt keep it in.
Why “Yahtzee”? Because by now, “Checkmate” has to be overplayed.

He may also not want to hit their erstwhile ally, Captain Hood. Who should be coming out of warp just in time to be clipped by the beam.
That way Bob can “disable” his ship and not be responsible for shooting him himself.
I think ‘target lock’ is like the range safety on torpedoes. You can shut it off, but there may be some dire consequences if you screw up.
