I’m wondering if Cthulhu is trying to teach Red how to turn off his new found ability to see the “true” faces of people. Red would still have the ability, but also to ability to turn it off and on at will. Kind of like the way wizards in various stories have the “third sight/eye”.

Maybe. Sounds like Cthulhu is working his way towards getting Red to … not pay attention to what’s going on around him? Something like that.
I wonder if it might just be as simple as “stop thinking so hard”? 😀
Cthulhu needs one of those Lucy/Charlie Brown Psychiatrist booths with a can and a sign saying
“The Eldrich Horror is in 5c”.
I remember that! Although, it seemed like more of a running gag than a booth! 😀
