What if the Cryptlons were willing to clarify their statement further by adding in “…permanently” in the second last panel? It seems obvious to me that Red might die here and not come back, I’m quite frankly surprised he hasn’t grasped the meaning of the Cryptlon’s statements yet. 😀
When you cannot die, you really don’t fear death right up until he taps you on the shoulder. And then you are more surprised than frightened.
What do we say to the God of Death?
“I’m not even supposed to be here today!”
“What the hell took you so long?”
If Red permanently dies here, I’m going to be very disappointed.
At least it would be dying for a big, hairy, important reason beyond plot tension. I think Scalzi, patron saint of redshirts, would be OK with that.
Red’s not coming back from this one. They wouldn’t make such a big deal of it if the reality were anything but that.

He may well have done so, and consider the goal worth that risk. It’s a pretty darn important mission. Fate of the worlds and all.
I gotta say, the Cryptlons aren’t making themselves seem any more trustworthy by constantly repeating that.
