I always wondered about palpatines plan. he already ruled the republic so why create an even bigger conflict? If he wanted a new regime he could just, well, invade the republic! makes no sense.
Um, what? He was Chancellor. That does not mean he ruled the Republic. The Senate ruled the Republic, and the entire point of episodes two and three was him gradually appropriating more power from them, culminating in his becoming Emperor. Even then, it wasn’t until the beginning of episode four nineteen years later that he finally disbanded the Senate completely.
Technically, he was only chancellor. Like how Hitler was chancellor and then tricked the German government into giving him more power. It’s basically the pre-ww2 days in Star Wars format.
